USA survey for anyone who wants to improve Denver TMAU test

begun : Dec22
end : no ending for now

A trainee genetic counselor is working at the Denver TMAU test lab. Probably as part of her training. As a project she wishes feedback on any aspect of the Denver TMAU test and process. You can fill in the survey and/or email her (email address is in survey). It's meant for USA people, but perhaps others can give their view too (as we have so few opportunities).

quote from her rareconnect post

"Hello all! I wanted to make you aware of a research study being conducted to better understand the experience and needs of individuals with trimethylaminuria with a goal of being able to create improved patient and healthcare provider education materials. Any participation is completely voluntary and all responses remain confidential. Feel free to use the contact information within the link with any questions or share the survey with others with TMAU."

List of the pH of common cleansers for (suggested) Trimethylaminuria management

The following list the pH of some of the more popular cleansers/soaps.

Context: One of the suggestions on The trimethylaminuria paper published on the NIH Gene reviews site, by Drs. Phillips and Shephard, London, for a TMAU (trimethylaminuria) management protocol is the use of an acid soap/cleanser to attempt to neutralize some of the highly alkaline trimethylamine. For this reason this list is published, until a more comprehensive one can be found. Thanks to Sonya from the MSN Body Odor forum for posting the link.

Use of acid soaps and body lotions. Trimethylamine is a strong base (pKa 9.8). Thus, at pH 6.0, less than 0.02% of trimethylamine exists as the volatile free base. The use of soaps and body lotions with a pH close to that of normal skin (pH 5.5-6.5) helps retain secreted trimethylamine in a less volatile salt form that can be removed by washing.

i had this smell for the past 15 years and finally stomped on the idea of sqatting for every bowel movement will get rid of odor in about two weeks. reason being is that the smell TMAU is also made up of feces, bacteria and gas. We are so backup with feces. The less you have in the colon, the less smell builds up so the less odor. When you squat to move your bowels you have a complete evacuation leaving less odor. It will take about two weeks to move out all the old feces when you start practicing this procedure. A colonic cleanse will speed up this process providing you purchase a squatting tool device to use with your toilet. Until you buy this product a bedpan will do the trick. Use the bedpan on the floor. Also take a probotic supplemtns. And please do your research on the Benefits of squatting when moving the bowels.

I have this issue but it only affects me in the summer or anytime the sun hits my skin. It is extremely embarassing I wish I could speak with someone who has this also for moral support. It is destroying my social life.

I have this issue and started a year ago. I have isolated myself. I stopped going out, can't make new friends. No one wants to talk to someone that smells, even at church. It's weird that my friends and family don't smell it. The smell is not constant, but when I'm in high stress, the smell triggers, well that's when I'm able to smell it. The smell permeates a whole auditorium (church) My smell ranges from rotten, sewage, and fecal. I've changed my food intake and wash in low pH soaps and take the recommended vitamins and it seems to work. The foods I still struggle with, it's mostly trial and error.

Is TMAU considered to be a food intolerance disease?

In a way it could be called that in the sense the person (with genetic TMAU) cannot efficiently break down trimethylaine, but it's not an 'allergy' reaction (e.g. immune reaction). It's a mismatch between the amount of trimethylamine and the ability to oxidize it all.

It's mainly a diet to avoid trimethylamine, and anything that may inhibit the enzyme that oxidizes trimethylamine.

The idea is to avoid trimethylamine., For instance choline is broken down to trimethylamine by gut bacteria. This is probably the main source of trimethylamine in humans apart from seafood

And also to avoid anything that may inhibit the FMO3 enzyme (such as cruciferous vegetables).

I guess 'intolerance' usually means because they cannot break something down normally and tend to become overloaded with a compound (such as lactose), but it is not an immune reaction.

Imused to smell so bad. It turn out the regular soap was the culprit because it made my skin too alkaline. After hours of research , I switched to low ph soap.amazing result. I have no body odor even after working out. My sweat is odorless.i hope this help someone
