USA survey for anyone who wants to improve Denver TMAU test

begun : Dec22
end : no ending for now

A trainee genetic counselor is working at the Denver TMAU test lab. Probably as part of her training. As a project she wishes feedback on any aspect of the Denver TMAU test and process. You can fill in the survey and/or email her (email address is in survey). It's meant for USA people, but perhaps others can give their view too (as we have so few opportunities).

quote from her rareconnect post

"Hello all! I wanted to make you aware of a research study being conducted to better understand the experience and needs of individuals with trimethylaminuria with a goal of being able to create improved patient and healthcare provider education materials. Any participation is completely voluntary and all responses remain confidential. Feel free to use the contact information within the link with any questions or share the survey with others with TMAU."

MEBO gut dysbiosis study

Our study overseer, Professor Irene Gabashvilli, had these comments to make on the results

Your results are most similar to our Tester #3 who also had high ethanol, and high or borderline 1-propanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, and 2-methyl-1-butanol. This tester's short chain fatty acid profile was also normal, while indicans was positive. This person was complaining of "slightly unusual "anal" odor" too.

High ethanol might not necessarily mean yeast overgrowth, bacteria can produce ethanol too. Positive indicans is a sign of abnormal bacterial colonization in the small intestine, and could imply many different things including pancreatic insufficiency or celiac disease. By the way, tester #3 was suspecting sensitivity to gluten.

Below are some comments from tester 14 herself about her condition

Other people comment on a fecal smell (I am not able to smell it myself, only very occasionally). It just leaks out without any control over it.

symptoms : Bloating, Constipation, Gas, Pale coloured stools, Stomach or lower abdominal pain, Undigested food in stool when consumed too much fructose

Fructose malabsorption- found through diet (exempting food high in fructose) that I do not suffer from diarrhea anymore, but this does nothing to prevent the fecal odour.

crave simple carbs

probiotics Feel worse but suspect it is a good reaction

other symptoms : Tired, post nasal drip, tonsilliths, thrush, acne

Any connections : Stress makes it much much worse, especially social situations. Consuming foods high in fructose makes the amount of gas I suffer from worse, increases bloating. Period causes constipation which I find makes it much worse.

Comment on the study : It is finally nice to see actual research taking this serious. All the doctors I have been to think I am exaggerating, or do not listen to me properly or just think I am anxious.

The summary of all results can be seen in this table

the comments i have seen here are similar to what i experience and it has been traumatising for me. i have tried many perfumes, anti perspirants and deodorants but none seems to work. the distressing part is that i use public transport and reactions and comments from people on buses and coaches have made me clusterphobic and loose my confidence.

please how can i join a meet up. i live in leeds
