USA survey for anyone who wants to improve Denver TMAU test

begun : Dec22
end : no ending for now

A trainee genetic counselor is working at the Denver TMAU test lab. Probably as part of her training. As a project she wishes feedback on any aspect of the Denver TMAU test and process. You can fill in the survey and/or email her (email address is in survey). It's meant for USA people, but perhaps others can give their view too (as we have so few opportunities).

quote from her rareconnect post

"Hello all! I wanted to make you aware of a research study being conducted to better understand the experience and needs of individuals with trimethylaminuria with a goal of being able to create improved patient and healthcare provider education materials. Any participation is completely voluntary and all responses remain confidential. Feel free to use the contact information within the link with any questions or share the survey with others with TMAU."

More deaths linked to brain-eating amoeba in tap water

Deaths from primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) continues to show up since last we posted about it in this blog in December 2011, Neti Pot Deaths Linked to Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water. A new article in foxnews.com/health reports two new victims, a 28-year-old many and a 51-year-old woman from different parts of Louisiana after using neti pots filled with tap water to irrigate their sinuses.

Water samples taken from the victims’ homes tested positive for Naegleria fowleri (N. fowleri), a climate-sensitive amoeba found in warm freshwater lakes and rivers. N. fowleri has over a 99 percent fatality rate, with only one known survivor in the U.S. since 1962.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are reminding consumers to use boiled, distilled or filtered water using neti pots or other nasal rinsing devices.

The FDA said in a released statement:

Some tap water contains low levels of organisms, such as bacteria and protozoa, including amoebas, which may be safe to swallow because stomach acid kills them,” the FDA said in a released statement. “But these ‘bugs’ can stay alive in nasal passages and cause potentially serious infections.
