This is a recent paper where the researchers in Bristol (UK) used solid-phase microextraction to extract, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to analyze what the volatile organic compounds were in fecal samples from 'healthy' volunteers compared to samples in certain groups of 'unhealthy volunteers' with 'defined' bowel problems.
Little is known about the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in feces and their potential health consequences. Patients and healthcare professionals have observed that feces often smell abnormal during gastrointestinal disease. The aim of this work was to define the volatiles emitted from the feces of healthy donors and patients with gastrointestinal disease...It is interesting to read what makes up the volatile organic compounds.
