USA survey for anyone who wants to improve Denver TMAU test

begun : Dec22
end : no ending for now

A trainee genetic counselor is working at the Denver TMAU test lab. Probably as part of her training. As a project she wishes feedback on any aspect of the Denver TMAU test and process. You can fill in the survey and/or email her (email address is in survey). It's meant for USA people, but perhaps others can give their view too (as we have so few opportunities).

quote from her rareconnect post

"Hello all! I wanted to make you aware of a research study being conducted to better understand the experience and needs of individuals with trimethylaminuria with a goal of being able to create improved patient and healthcare provider education materials. Any participation is completely voluntary and all responses remain confidential. Feel free to use the contact information within the link with any questions or share the survey with others with TMAU."

Leaky gut (intestinal permeability) urine test can be bought online for around $90

Leaky gut is an unknown factor in bloodborne/metabolic body odor/halitosis. For those who wish to test, it is reasonably cheap and straightforward to test (it is a urine test), and sellers of the test are available online.

There are 2 types of the test, the PEG test, and the lactulose-mannitol test (the most common type of test). There are a few reputable test companies who do the test. An example (and best known) is Genova Diagnostics Intestinal Permeability test. Example sellers below sell Genovas 'intestinal permeability' test.

http://www.integrativepsychiatry.net/genova_diagnostics.html $90
http://www.crohns.net/page/C/PROD/GSD2100 $90

If you do the test, it would be great if you could let the body odor/halitosis community know in some way, so that we may be able to see patterns and define a typical profile of a sufferer. Also, it would be helpful to learn of any procedure problems. Perhaps it is cheaper elsewhere.

While seemingly largely ignored by mainstream medicine, some researchers are looking at possible connections with illnesses. The best known being a study that found that only alcoholics with leaky gut developed cirrhosis

The First paper on leaky gut was 1984. Since then there has been little but gathering interest. There have been theories with regards a connection in crohns disease, and this month with heart failure

When they say leaky 'gut, It seems they mean leaky small intestine. The cells lining the small intestine are supposed to use glutamine for growth, whereas the colon cells are thought to grow on butyrate.

Note: These tests also test for malabsorption (i.e. not enough absorption). you can have both malabsorption and leaky gut. Leaky gut is due to gaps between the cells, whereas absorption is direct through the cell and may be interfered with for some reason.
