Manchester body odor/halitosis meetup : June 9th

Hello all, decided to kick the summer off with a meetup in Manchester on Saturday June 9th.
We will be meeting in Manchester City centre around lunch time. In a venue with lots of space and outdoor seating so we can relax. Then on to a couple more bars/restaurants in the city centre.

As always, anyone with a malodour condition is welcome to attend. The meetups are a great opportunity to socialise with fellow sufferers in a relaxed environment. People are free to come and go as they please, newcomers are especially welcome. Look forward to seeing you all there.

EURORDIS interest in TMAU : Message from Online Patient Communities Manager

MEBO Research has been looking to be involved with the national and international Rare Disease networks. In the USA this includes NORD, which is the main USA network. In Europe the main network is EURORDIS, which MEBO are seeking to join and have developed contact with.

Alveolar breath test for systemic body odor/halitosis in Chicago : A message from Mike

Below is a message from MEBO's Managing Director, Mike, who last weekend oversaw test sampling for the MEBO Alveolar breath exploratory study for systemic body odor and halitosis in Chicago. This was the first of hopefully many samplings which will take place in various locations. If you are interested in testing in a big city near you you can contact Mike at mike@meboresearch.org 
Breath tests were conducted over the weekend in Chicago, and the BCA will now travel to Miami. I want to say thank you to everyone I met over the weekend.  It was memorable hearing everyone’s story. I also want to thank those who traveled far to get to Chicago.
Although participation was not what I had hoped for the initial launch of the program, I want to thank everyone that simply showed up to check out the BCA equipment and to learn more about it. Not only will we learn a tremendous amount from this research, each sufferer will receive their own detailed reports. Each tester will receive 3 reports.

Menssana Research is excited to be partnering with MEBO to offer a breath test for body malodor. We understand that this condition has been difficult to diagnose and only a subset of subjects afflicted test positive for Trimethylaminuria (TMAU), thereby establishing an urgent need for alternative diagnostic and screening options.
With this collaborative study we are hoping to find a unique suite of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that can be detected in the alveolar breath of affected individuals using our Breath Collection Apparatus (BCA 5.0) which will further research in this area by providing the necessary feasibility data to fund a larger human clinical study in the future.

Weekend 1 : Alveolar Breath testing study in Chicacgo for systemic body odor & halitosis

MEBO Alveolar malodor Breath Test Study
This weekend sees the start of the MEBO Research alveolar breath test study, in which volunteers can pay to have their own alveolar breath sampled.

It is taking place in Chicago and 4 people are expected to test. The testing is taking place in a private room in a public library, with the testing personally overseen by our Managing Director, Mike. Sampling should take about 15 minutes per person.

Alveolar breath is breath from the lungs, so is essentially air from the circulation. This means it may spot odorous compounds from the circulation that are in higher numbers than normal people. So hopefully it will be of use in giving clues of any enzyme disorders.

Mike has his own result back from Menssana, which we hope to post soon.

First testing of the Alveolar breath exploratory study is scheduled to take place in Chicago 21 & 22 under the guidance of MEBO's Managing Director Mike. It is hoped testing can continue in various locations over the year with the hope that a 'trend' may appear that will take the systemic malodor community a step further than the only test currently on offer; for trimethylaminuria.

Alveolar breath is breath that has circulated systemically and is expired from the lungs. For that reason it could be a good way of spotting compounds circulating in the blood. This means it will probably be most suitable for anyone who thinks they have a body odor or halitosis that is systemically sourced (i.e. a metabolic malodor problem).

The Menssana breath capture apparatus used to collect samples can only detect compounds containing more than 3 carbons. This means it will miss a few 'prime suspects' we would be looking for that are FMO3 substrates, such as trimethylamine and dimethylsulfide. However it seems FMO3 substrates can have more than 3 carbons, so it is hoped perhaps some will be spotted (if FMO3 is an issue).

However, it must be kept in mind that this is research into a new area and it is not known what or if anything will be of any significance. Expectations are best to be kept low for the study. Each sample will be tested for 200 compounds.

Unfortunately due to no funding, any volunteers will need to pay their own sample to cover the costs. Currently this is set at $345.

It is hoped that testing can occur in various locations worldwide. Apparently training for the test and testing is relatively simple. It involves blowing into the breath apparatus for a few minutes and then the canister is sent to Menssana for testing. This will be the first testing. Provisionally, it is planned to take place in a library private room. If you would like to know more you can contact Mike at mike@meboresearch.org.

Message from Cheryl Fields : The Diversity Project

It was a few years ago employers were being sued because they didn't hire anyone they perceived gay or transgender, because in the 1980's they thought these employees would bring AIDS to the workplace and the work culture/environment would be ruined? It was during the civil rights era (1954-1963) in the US, where it was actually unlawful to a certain point to even THINK about hiring anyone who was black, African American, or "colored" back then, as the thinking at the time was the work place would be ruined or upset and people would have "panic" attacks by hiring co-workers/peers who were black or African American!

After the tragic events of the 11 September 2001 in the United States, employers, airlines, schools, etc. attempted to discriminate on anyone who appeared to be Muslim?

Recently in Arizona (2010-2012), the unconstitutionality of the new Arizona Immigration Law, which would allow police to stop any person they may find "suspicious" - or have "reasonable suspicion" that the individual is not in this country legally - and ask for the person's immigration papers--and/or anyone who LOOKS Hispanic, Mexican American, Latino, etc. Talk about a WEAK case!

The point is someone has to take a stand for causes, issues, or equal rights. And folks laughed in the 1980's about folks with AIDS or who were gay. Women's Rights (1848 to 1920), were thought to be an insane and laughing matter at the time, until someone stood up and began to fight for the rights of women in the US (and eventually across the world). The late Dorothea Lynde Dix (April 4, 1802 – July 17, 1887) was an American activist on behalf of the indigent insane who, through a vigorous program of lobbying state legislatures and the United States Congress, created the first generation of American mental asylums. During the Civil War, she served as Superintendent of Army Nurses. Folks actually thought Ms. Dix to be a witch, the devil, and/or just plain crazy/nuts! Thank goodness she stood up, because now people with mental illness are usually treated with respect, and dignity. Oh by the way, all of the cases I have stated were thought to be very "WEAK" and even "INSANE" at the time, but history tells us different. Change is slow and takes a continual battle. There are probably more examples many of you may have to share, I just wanted to share a few in this post.

The point is someone has to take a stand for causes, issues, or equal rights.
Just because something is one way, does not mean that it has to stay that way. Thank goodness the late Rosa Parks (December 4, 1955) sat down on the bus in 1955, because of her courageous efforts, I am able to STAND UP and fight for the causes I believe in.

The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights clearly states ethical principles held by most peoples throughout the world. In addition to stating what Cheryl presents above, it clearly depicts the world views on human rights to a "standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family..." Below are a few excerpts from this document.

Article 23.

(1) Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.
(2) Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.
(3) Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection.
(4) Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests.

Article 24.

Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.

Article 25.

(1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
(2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.


In addition, I would like to quote a member of our community who wrote a post for this blog on November 11, 2008, The Malodorous People's Declaration of Rights by Benjamin Brimmer" in which he states,



When in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one group of People to state their grievances with fellow humankind, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the Nondiscriminatory and Equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to seek such Equality of Rights.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all humans are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Throughout History, Humankind has long oppressed and emotionally scarred our fellow Brothers and Sisters, of which are unfortunate Victims of various malodorous Medical Conditions. Prudence will dictate that the Status Quo should not be changed for light and transient Causes; and accordingly, We do not request anything other than an Entitlement Due to all Humans; all people have the Due Right to uphold their Dignity, no matter however Nature and God chose to endow each and every one of Us. Therefore, We the Malodorous People Unite, and firmly assert our grievance; all that We ask for is Respect. To secure these Rights, we the Malodorous People of God's Great Earth, do now state cause for our collective grievance against humanity. Let these Facts be submitted to a candid World.

Presenting MEBO UK's new Director of Hispanic Affairs

It gives me great pleasure to announce Natalia’s acceptance of the post of Hispanic Affairs Director of our not-for-profit Limited by Guarantee Company, MEBO Research (MEBO UK). As a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife with a Masters Degree in Health Services Research, Natalia brings with her a solid foundation in the medical field that can only be beneficial to our community.

For the past two years, Natalia has been very instrumental in dispersing information between the English and Spanish communities of sufferers around the world by translating documents, videos, and posts, such as the USDA Choline Content of Foods and Dr. Cheryl Field’s video with Spanish subtitles, “TMAU: A sufferer’s perspective,” to name a few. Thanks to her diligent work in MEBO’s Spanish blog, Natalia has significantly contributed to our 200 daily unique visitors to this blog from countries around the world who read approximately 500 pages a day. In addition, Natalia has contacted some experts in various countries to raise awareness and discuss body odor issues, including TMAU, with them.

Please join me in welcoming Natalia with open arms into MEBO’s directorship, and look forward to a continued productive relationship as we move forward towards initiating research, understanding, and effective treatment for all types of breath and body odor conditions.

Questions and Answers: MEBO-Menssana VOC Alveolar Breath Study


I would like to share with you the following questions I have received from sufferers who are considering participating in the VOC Alveolar Breath Research Study. I hope this presents a more comprehensive picture of what each sufferer is encouraged to participate in not only to obtain answers to one's personal condition, even if only to rule out possibilities, but to also contribute toward research efforts.



NOTE: An invoice with a PayPal button will be sent to you 45 to 30 days prior to the testing date, and payment must be received prior to testing. However sufferers are strongly encouraged to express interest by filling out the Requisition Form as soon as possible in order to encourage MEBO to schedule testing in your area, if enough interest is indicated in your area.




Question: I suffer from body odor, not halitosis. What can this test do for me?

Answer:
This test is designed to detect alveolar breath, which means that it detects up to 200 compounds that come from the bloodstream through the blood capillaries into the alveolar sacs in the lungs and out in the breath. This test intends to identify some systemic causes of body odor. By systemic, it is meant to be affecting the body generally (vs. locally). In other words, this test is intended to address the concerns of body odor sufferers and sufferers of systemic halitosis.




Question: What is the purpose of this test/study?

Answer:
This study is strictly exploratory. The Free Dictionary gives a very good definition of the different types of research. It defines exploratory research as, “studies that are merely formative, for the purpose of gaining new insights, discovering new ideas, and increasing knowledge of phenomena.”

MEBO Research is offering this opportunity to carry out an exploratory study because the one and only test available to our community is the TMAU test (urine and DNA). The genetic form of TMAU is certified as a rare disease, affecting only 1-5% of the US population, so what recourse do the other 95% of the population have? The answer is ABSOLUTELY NONE! This is the reason for this exploratory test. Furthermore, many persons diagnosed with TMAU claim that they don’t smell of fish most of the time, but rather of other kinds of odors, such as fecal odor, garbage, sewer, burnt odor, etc. So, could there be other causes of body odor at play? Only exploratory research could attempt to look for answers to these questions.




Question: Would this test give results to the individual testing, or is this only for the whole community?

Answer:
The individual person testing will receive his or her results, but the interpretation of those results will not become available until after Dr. Michael Phillips, MD, FACP, FRCP, has received one year’s worth of data and arrives at his conclusion. At that time, the individual person can see where his or her results compare to those of other sufferers and a control group, with Dr. Phillips’ interpretation and conclusion.




Question: How is this going the help the community move forward?

Answer:
Worst-case scenario, this test/study will serve to “rule out” causes. Sufferers are blindly putting themselves on very restrictive diets and taking countless supplements, and spending money, probably unnecessarily, on various treatment and surgical procedures. By ruling out certain causes, sufferers could then feel more comfortable re-introducing foods in their diets, and may decide not to go through with unnecessary treatment or surgical procedures.

Best case scenario would be that we may find an elevated level of one or more odor-producing compound in our community. Dr. Phillips has told us that whatever VOCs are elevated compared to the control group, he will study the metabolic pathways that produce the volatile to define the volatile's metabolic origins (precursor). In doing this, he will point us in the right director for MEBO to pursue more targeted future research.




Question: How long will this breath analysis instrument be at any testing site?

Answer:
It depends on the demand expressed by sufferers in filling out the Requisition Form. It costs money to ship the instrument to a location and to rent a room where we can collect samples. The funds will come from the $345 participants pay. $300 will go to Menssana for sample analysis, and $45 for shipping and renting the locale.




Question: If the BCA 5.0 instrument is donated, why does the test cost $345?

Answer:
Normally, Menssana rents out the BCA 5.0 instrument and charges for the analysis of the samples. But they have allowed us to use it for one year without charging MEBO. Menssana charges $300 per sample for analyzing the samples collected, and for analyzing all the data obtained from samples (sufferers’ and control group’s samples), and writing the conclusion to the study.





The cost of the test is $345/USD per person.
This amount does not cover the total cost of this study, and therefore, donations are welcome using the donate button provided below. This exploratory study will benefit our body and breath malodor community, as this is only an initial step towards discovering the causes, treatment, and ultimately, the cure for all types of body odor and halitosis conditions.

Film location : Mexico City

A fictional comedy drama movie based around a boy who has trimethylaminuria (TMAU) can be expected to be released this year. The production team are based in Canada, and the film location itself is Mexico City. It stars Zoe Kravitz, daughter of Lenny Kravitz.

Information available currently is very limited. Presumably it will be released in the later half of the year.
